Why 390 days?

390 days comes from Ezekiel 4:5. God is using symbolic means to signify judgment on Israel and Judah in Ezekiel 4. In this particular symbol, he has Ezekiel lie on his left side for 390 days, signifying the 390 years of Israel’s sinfulness. God said, “So for 390 days you will bear the sin of the house of Israel.” He then proceeds to have Ezekiel lie on his right side for 40 days, signifying the number of years of Judah’s sinfulness. So he lays on his sides for a total of 430 days. Ouch! It’s a very interesting passage of scripture that is often overlooked. A few verses later Ezekiel has to bake his bread over cow poop, signifying how Israel will eat defiled food among the nations where He would later drive them.

Back to the 390 days concept. I know this may not be sound exegesis, but to me this passage is amazing. Ezekiel literally suffers one year and one month just to get God’s point across to the nation of Israel. He then goes on for another month and a half for Judah on his right side. The point was that God took sin seriously — and so should we. I think God is still trying to get our attention today regarding our sin. While he doesn’t necessarily ask us to lay on our side or cook our food over poop, He did say:

“If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it. What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul? For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father’s glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what he has done.” (Matthew 16:24-27, NIV)

390 days reminds us of a merciful, yet just and holy God. 390 days reminds us that God still takes sin seriously today. 390 days is a call to persevere and “fight the good fight of the faith” (1 Timothy 6:12, NIV). 390 days is a reminder to daily deny ourselves and pursue Jesus. Laying on your side for 390 days would be horrible, but standing by while a spiritual war is being waged against our souls is even worse. 390days.com wants to help equip you to battle the enemy by helping you understand who you are in Christ.

I used the term Christianity 2.0 in the subtitle to refer to the church today, and how it is continuously and necessarily evolving and adapting to culture. Hence the logo being a cross with a USB drive inside of it. I will often discuss “new” and “emerging” trends in Christianity, including but not limited to technology, doctrine, movements, repeated history, etc.
