Oh, I know. I was responding to the previous comments, not to the post... though they built off the post, by asserting that most American churches are about self-gratification, not self-sacrifice.

That's great, Rich. I'm glad to hear that area churches were able to help your local homeless, that is wonderful. This post is concerned with an understanding of salvation and the Gospel, not so much social justice. Great deeds of social justice are done by individuals everywhere, Christian or not. This post is concerned with people's understanding of God's good news of salvation. Without a proper perspective on this, even all of our great deeds of social justice are like "filthy rags" before God.

Dan, I know you wrote this a while ago, so maybe by now you're starting to tone down your "most churches are bad" vibe... but I find it a bit ironic that you wrote your comment in December, and mentioned collecting groceries for a shelter... because that was about halfway through the 6 months that more than a dozen churches in Valparaiso partnered together to provide shelter for homeless men, providing them with a warm place to sleep and 3 meals a day. I forget the exact numbers, but more than 70 men were served, some of whom would likely have died without a place to stay.

So let me be another voice asking you to look around and see that not every church is completely failing to live up to its calling. :)
