“A great many of those who ‘debunk’ traditional values have in the background values of their own which they believe to be immune from the debunking process.” ~ C.S. Lewis

Refocusing

July 6, 2010

I’ve gone through lots of old posts and deleted many of them, most of them dealing with local events and anything having to do with politics. I wanted to free my database from some clutter and get a fresh start. I’ve also redesigned the website (again) to incorporate some more features that hopefully make it [...]

Anti-intellectualism

July 5, 2010

I received two comments in the last few days that have reeked of anti-intellectualism, a dangerous heresy that infiltrated fundamentalist Christianity, Pentecostalism, and now many mainstream evangelical churches. I posted a video recently encouraging Christians to think, and a post about how most Christians cannot explain their faith that precipitated a lot of this. This [...]

Happy 4th of July!

July 4, 2010

Have a great (and safe) Independence Day. Even more important than being thankful for our national freedom, be thankful that Christ has purchased us from the grave and won our eternal freedom from sin, death, and the devil. “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free” (Galatians 5:1).

Most Christians Cannot Explain Their Faith, says Christian Post

June 21, 2010

I’ve been pointing this out for awhile. This Christian Post article shows how few Christians have any intellectual basis for their faith and most cannot explain it in an intelligible way: The faith of most Christians, even that of many pastors, will not stand up to intellectual scrutiny, according to renowned apologist Josh McDowell. This [...]

Looking for a job? Think outside of the box….

June 18, 2010

This is ingenious. A reminder to those looking for a job: Think outside of the box. What if churches bought up interesting search terms like “Christianity sucks” or “Is God real?” On a more practical level, churches should buy up the search term “church (your city).”

Think!

June 16, 2010

The Church has long embraced anti-intellectualism. It creeps up into many circles within the faith – no one seems to be exempt. This video by John Piper encourages Christians to think and directs us towards some good speakers who help us do just that. I would add to the list many of the great minds [...]

Life is not about us!

June 14, 2010

The above image shows my recent lament on Facebook after hearing from yet another former believer who has been destroyed by the man-centered pop-psychological mantra of many American churches. Why do churches jump on this pop-psychology bandwagon? It doesn’t end well – it simply creates more self-absorbed people. Whether we pity ourselves, esteem ourselves, or [...]

Virtual Choir

June 11, 2010

This is amazing. This guy put together a virtual choir on YouTube, with over 180 members from 12 countries. It sounds great and had to take a long time to put together!

“The Bible parable says that while men slept, the enemy sowed tares among the wheat. A boy who rises at 4:30 to deliver papers is considered a go-getter, but to urge our young people to rise at 5:30 to pray is considered fanaticism. We must once again wear the harness of discipline. There is no [...]

What happens when a demon-oppressed man preaches…

June 3, 2010

We’ve seen it recently with Todd Bentley, and now again with this guy: No, he’s not drunk on wine nor on the Holy Spirit, he’s under the influence of demons. Or he’s got mental issues – but either way this isn’t the work of God, for “God is not a God of disorder but of [...]

Should churches compete with each other?

May 31, 2010

Should they? If the emphasis is on making disciples, then there really is no competition. In John 4, when Jesus finds out people have taken notice that he baptized more people than John (his disciples did, anyways), he gets out of the way, interestingly enough. Yet when churches use marketing tactics and strategic business planning [...]

“…Christ did not appoint professors, but followers. If Christianity … is not reduplicated in the life of the person expounding it, then he does not expound Christianity, for Christianity is a message about living and can only be expounded by being realized in men’s lives.” –Soren Kierkegaard

Canceling church to do service projects

May 24, 2010

I’ve heard a lot about this lately. A church in St. Louis, MO recently canceled services in order to do community projects. Several people whose opinions I respect have mentioned the prospect of doing this lately, and several others whom I also respect have voiced strong opposition to this. Here’s a short video about this [...]

“Many Christians have what we might call a “cultural holiness”. They adapt to the character and behavior pattern of Christians around them. As the Christian culture around them is more or less holy, so these Christians are more or less holy. But God has not called us to be like those around us. He has [...]

Are Christians Supposed To Feel Guilty All The Time?

May 19, 2010

Kevin DeYoung wrote a great post about this issue that I highly recommend. Do you ever feel guilty that: You could pray more. You aren’t bold enough in evangelism. You like sports too much. You watch movies and television too often. Your quiet times are too short or too sporadic. You don’t give enough. You [...]

Christian Wrestling…

May 13, 2010

I’ve actually attended a church that does this, very interesting. I think it’s good that these guys tie it in to Christ at the end and share the good news about Christ, despite my theological quibbles with the “altar call” methodology. So long as this is truly being done to the glory of God, I [...]
